“Just around the corner was the suitcase sale. There were piles and piles of large-sized suitcases that stretched across the ground floor area; suitcases in cardboard boxes, wrapped in cloth or clear plastic bags, and stacked about six feet tall.

The mound was blocked off by grey barricade fences to keep citizens from self-serving, grabbing, or destroying the heaps. But groups of people fumbled and yanked the suitcases out of the bags to check for cracks or stains or if the zippers and wheels functioned. I clutched my bag tightly as we wedged ourselves in…”
